American Mahjong Jokers: Rules, Substitutions and Strategy

How jokers work in American Mah Jongg β€” what they can and cannot replace, exchanging jokers, Charleston rules, and when to hold them.

What jokers are

American Mah Jongg uses 8 jokers on top of the 144 standard tiles. A joker is a wild tile: it stands in for any tile you need to complete a combination block on the yearly card.

Because they are wild, jokers are the most valuable tiles in the game β€” everyone wants them, and they often decide who wins a hand.

What jokers can replace

Jokers may substitute for any tile inside a pung, kong, quint or sextet β€” blocks of three or more identical tiles. They may NOT be used as a pair, a single tile, or as the 2026/NEWS tiles in those special hands.

When a hand uses no jokers (and is not a Singles-and-Pairs hand), the score is doubled β€” so holding jokers helps you complete a hand but reduces your payout.

Exchanging jokers

If another player discards the natural tile your exposed joker is standing in for, you may exchange the joker for that tile on your turn. This is optional and a common source of free points.

The exchanged joker goes back into your hand and can be re-used later β€” exchanging is almost always right when the chance appears.

Jokers and the Charleston

Jokers may never be passed during the Charleston. If you receive jokers in a pass, keep them β€” they are the reason passing strategy focuses on dumping flowers and duplicate tiles instead.

The Charleston is also the only phase where holding jokers changes your pass decisions: never send a joker, even if your hand seems crowded.

Strategy: hold or spend?

Jokers are worth more in your hand than in your discard pile, so keep them unless a card line genuinely needs the space. Prefer jokers in exposed pungs β€” they are safer there and free your natural tiles for singles.

Track how many jokers are visible. Once most are on the table, a hand needing jokers becomes much harder to finish, which is useful information against opponents.
