Classic Mahjong Fan List: The International Scoring Patterns

The full practical fan list used on this site for classic (International Standard) mahjong — pure one-suit, mixed one-suit, all pungs, seven pairs and more.

The practical fan set

Classic scoring on this site follows a practical subset of the International Standard fan list. The most valuable patterns are pure one-suit (清一色, 6+ fan), mixed one-suit (混一色, 3), all pungs (碰碰胡, 6) and seven pairs (七对, 4).

Building blocks of fan

Smaller patterns stack up quickly: a one-dragon run (一条龙) is worth 1-2 fan, three color runs (三色同顺) add 2, and a concealed hand adds 1-2. Two dragons or two dragons & one seat wind (双箭刻/双箭碰) also score.

The any-win rule

As a beginner-friendly house rule, any legal winning hand counts at least 1 fan even without a named pattern. The fan count is shown after every win.
